for its greatest potential. (We dig into the messiness of ideas,
concepts, and content so you get the insights and strategies you need
to take test, refine, and enhance your idea.)
-
Teach
you how to connect your idea to the Zeitgeist ("spirit of the times"),
your market, and potential readers to enhance its commercial potential.
-
Dive
into the 4 Publishing Pathways (we'll explain!) and how to choose the
right option for you and your goals so you can plan your pathway to
success. (NOTE: There isn't one right way; the pathways all overlap and can work together, depending on the project.)
-
Tools,
processes, worksheets, examples--a method--you can return to over and
over again for any book or idea-driven project you want to develop and
launch.
So what exactly is the"Publishing Reset" and why is it so important to you?
Just
as we’re all experiencing a moment of radical “reset” in our economy
and our popular mindset (per Jeffrey Immelt of GE), so too are we
experiencing a radical “publishing reset” that is affecting everything
to do with books, publishing, online and offline media, the news, and
publicity. This reset is turning lots of older advice and "ways of
doing things" upside down. New rules (i.e.,
there are none!) are being written as much by writers and entrepreneurs
as by editors, publishers, and booksellers.
Too often, however, we've seen clients get stuck on
outmoded assumptions about how you “should” get published--the
"trance," we call it. It's a limiting mindset which prevents too many
of us from moving forward.
And
when you do tiptoe into publishing land, there's tons of advice out
there, but it's often contradictory and difficult to apply to your
personal situation. There are fierce advocates
for each approach which can lead to wasted time, wasted money,
misguided expectations, and a mismatch with your idea, resources,
goals, and needs.
If you're like many of our clients and previous participants in the Publishing Reset program, you may be overwhelmed by the smorgasbord of confusing choices when it comes to actually “getting published.” For example:
-
You
can publish an ebook -- from simple PDF options made available on your
own website to Kindles, Sony’s, iphone downloads, and uploads to cool
new publishing websites. Some are studded with all kinds of interactive
bells and whistles and changing as we speak. QUESTION: Do you think an "ebook" isn't a "real" book and you've overlooked the speed, immediacy, and flexibility of going this route?
-
Dozens
of competing POD (print-on-demand) companies offer affordable
one-book-at-a-time publishing packages, but the add-ons are a confusing
mess to sort out—and bookstores won’t touch them. QUESTION: Are
you looking to sidestep the gate-keeping of traditional publishing with
the ease of POD without a plan for how you'll get readers to know about
and buy your book, or do you feel POD is really just "vanity"
publishing and you don't realize it could be perfect for your
back-of-the-room sales, coaching groups, or open mike nights?
-
There’s
the indie self-publishing approach—the proverbial “books in the garage”
technique--that can require the skills of a creative director, the
business sense of a CFO, and the marketing chops of a pro, but in
quality and results they can amateur disasters or indistinguishable
from what the mainstream presses produce. QUESTION: Are
you about to take the self-publishing plunge without having budgeted
for the real costs of creation, manufacturing, distribution, and marketing, or do you want to go the self-pub route a second time--but better?
-
And
then there's the dream of traditional trade publishing, which means
getting an literary agent (often harder than getting an editor and
publisher) and selling the book to a major or boutique press. When
these books work, they can work in a big way. Yet as technology and the
media business change, it gets harder and harder for unknown authors to
achieve this kind of breakout success. QUESTION:
Are you stuck in the agent-query process, at a loss for where to begin,
or don't know what's missing in your proposal to make you publisher
ready...but you know this is what you want to achieve and you're willing to take the right steps?
There's
good news though. The solution isn't to avoid publishing--it's to
publish smart. To use the new technology and shifting trends as an
opportunity to produce a book that's a perfect fit for your market,
your goals, your dreams.
Who are we? And how can this program help?
Janet Goldstein
is an author, workshop leader, and nationally known publishing and
strategy consultant with more 25 years' executive editorial experience
at three of the largest NYC publishers and a roster of authors she's
helped launch onto the bestseller lists. Suzanne Falter-Barns,
an author, speaker, and founder of Get Known Now, is the leading online
platform-building expert who has helped hundreds of clients attract
major media, book deals, and customers to grow their businesses.
Last
spring, Janet and Suzanne led a live hands-on 2-day interactive
workshop in New York City for 24 people who wanted to achieve their own
book breakthrough. That program was based on actual experiences with
dozens of clients, previous workshop participants, and authors
currently going through the publishing process. The event was a huge
success (see below) and the participants walked out with a plan in
hand, knowing exactly what their next steps were. And many of them have
continued to stay in touch with each other and with us.

Clear, current and fearlessly realistic,
the Publishing Reset gives hope and action steps to those who want to
navigate the publishing jungle, from two publishing experts.
--Andrea J. Lee, Thought Partnership International and Multiple Streams of Income Coaching

Publishing Reset wildly exceeded my expectations. It
was easy to tell a great deal of thought, consideration and care (never
mind years of honed experience) went into the program, and I’m beyond
grateful to have been a recipient of it all. Finally -- your hot seat
feedback was electrifying and I really look forward to working with you
as I zero in and refine things in the next couple of months.

More Endorsements:

“The
process you developed for helping people find out what publishing
project to pursue and what to set aside was perfectly to the point. Everyone
I talked with (20 out of 20+ people) felt they got what they came for
and better, even -- or especially -- when some needful disillusionment
was involved."
--Elatia Harris
Janet and Suzanne, you rock!
Your
expertise and hands-on experience, combined with your openness and
willingness to share what you know, gave me a week's worth of learning
(ok, honestly, probably more like six month's worth of learning) in
just two days. The content about book titles was fantastic, and the hot
seats about positioning and hooky-ness really got me going. Since then,
the creative corner of my mind has been whirring and spinning, and new
ideas are coming out constantly! Even my dreams are filled with new
ideas!
--Leslie Ayres, The Job Search Guru, www.TheJobSearchGuru.com

Outstanding! The
combination of Janet's publishing expertise and Suzanne's
platform-building expertise are an incredible powerhouse. To sell books
today, authors need a platform, which Suzanne will help build. Combine
that with Janet's insider understanding of the publishing industry and
the two create a winning team.”

it will help you do just that.
